Hummingbirds breathe through their nares, which are small openings located at the base of their beak. Because they have a high metabolism, hummingbirds breathe at a very fast rate, taking up to 250 breaths per minute. This rapid breathing allows them to get the oxygen they need to power their flight and other activities.
