Why do birds puff up their feathers to keep warm?

Birds do not actually puff up their feathers to keep warm. In fact, fluffing up their feathers can cause birds to lose body heat. Instead, birds use their feathers to trap a layer of air close to their bodies, creating an insulating barrier that helps them retain heat.
