Why are the bald eagle head feathers white?

Bald eagles are not actually bald. They have dark feathers that cover the head and extend down the neck. When they are backlit by sunlight, the feathers on the head look pale or even light gray. This is because the feathers are very thin and transparent. The pale color of the feathers is due to the way light scatters off the air bubbles that are trapped inside them.
