Why do male mallard ducks chase other mallards from the flock?

Male mallard ducks do not chase other mallards from the flock. Instead, they aggressively chase other male mallards, but only during mating season. Male mallards are territorial, and their purpose in doing so is to protect their own mates from intruding male mallards who want to steal their partners.
