How long have hummingbirds been on earth?

The earliest known hummingbird fossils date back to the middle Eocene period, around 40 million years ago. These fossils were discovered in France, and they share many similarities with modern hummingbirds. This suggests that hummingbirds have been in existence for at least this long, and they have likely evolved very little over time.
