Why does a male turkey gobble?

Male turkeys gobble to attract females. Male wild turkeys sometimes gobble to assert themselves over an area or to announce their presence. Gobblers will also gobble to call the flock to roost or to let the flock know they found a food source. If a gobbler is silent, it may be a young bird that has yet to develop the gobble.
