Why were birds used in mines?

Canaries were used in mines because they are very sensitive to carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that is often found in mines. When the carbon monoxide levels in the air become too high, the canary will start to show signs of distress, such as gasping for air and falling off its perch. This would warn the miners that they needed to evacuate the mine.
