What does it mean when a dolphin bobs its head?

Dolphins bob their heads to produce a focused high-frequency beam of sound waves used for echolocation, a biological sonar system. Every time a dolphin produces this sound, the head tilts and the narrow sound waves are beamed forwards. By hearing the echoes of these sounds bounce back off of objects in their surroundings, dolphins can perceive the shape and distance of nearby objects.
