Why were black cats so important to witches?

Black cats have not always had negative connotations. Historically, they have featured prominently in various cultures; however, some ancient cultures, such as those in ancient Egypt, held them in high regard. There is no substantial historical evidence suggesting a direct correlation between witches and black cats in a religious or magical context.
