Why the eggs of viviparous animals is small in size?

Viviparous animals give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Thus their ovum do not need a covering of egg shell for protection and it remains small compared to the yolk loaded ova, with hard protective covering, as we see in oviparous animals'eggs .
