While sea otters have incredibly dense fur (up to 1 million hairs per square inch!), their individual hairs are much thinner than a polar bear's. Polar bear fur is not only thick, but each hair is hollow, which helps trap air and provide exceptional insulation in the frigid Arctic environment.
