The earliest account of guide dogs used in modern times dates back to Switzerland in 1780 during the construction of the Hospice of Great St. Bernard by Bernhard de Menthon to assist people navigating treacherous, alpine landscapes. During the First World War (1914-1918), guide dogs gained new significance.
