Docking tails is a controversial practice that can cause severe, lifelong pain for the dog. For this reason, some countries outlaw it.

While it is legal in some countries, there is no good reason for it, and it is never medically necessary. For these reasons, and because of the negative effects of tail docking on dogs, veterinarians no longer recommend the procedure.
