Why must a hamster only be fed fresh food in small amounts?

This statement is incorrect. Hamsters can store excess food in their cheeks and are prone to obesity if fed too much fresh food. They should instead be fed a small amount of dry food each day, such as a commercial hamster food mix, and supplemented with occasional treats of fresh fruits and vegetables.
