Why does doodle bury the bird?

In Flannery O'Connor's "The Life You Save May Be Your Own," Doodle buries the bird out of compassion. Doodle is a compassionate soul who sees the value of all life, even the smallest and most insignificant. He is moved by the bird's suffering and wants to give it a dignified resting place.
