Why did the Portuguese eat Dodo bird?

There is no evidence to suggest that the Portuguese ate Dodo birds. The Portuguese were some of the first Europeans to arrive on the island of Mauritius, where the Dodo bird was native, but there is no record of them hunting the bird for food.
