Where did foxes originate?

The earliest known fox-like species, Vulpes riffautae, first appeared during the Late Miocene approximately seven million years ago, likely evolving from the dog-like species Leptocyon. While they originated in North America, the genus eventually spread throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere.
