Are hippos are related to elephants?

Although hippos and elephants are large mammals that live in Africa, they are not closely related. Hippos are classified under the family Hippopotamidae, placing them more closely related to animals such as pigs, whales, and dolphins. On the other hand, elephants belong to the family Elephantidae. Despite both being herbivorous land animals with thick skin, their evolutionary paths diverged millions of years ago.
