As of 2021, there are estimated to be between 12,000 and 18,000 black panthers globally, with the majority living in sub-Saharan Africa. The largest populations are found in West and Central Africa, with an estimated 4,500 to 6,000 black panthers in Cameroon and Gabon, and an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 black panthers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
