How many animals have been abandoned in America?

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.1 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. Sadly, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year simply because there are not enough homes for them.
