As of 2019, the estimated number of animals in shelters in the United States is around 6.3 million. This includes cats, dogs, rabbits, horses, birds, and other species. Of these animals, approximately 3.1 million are dogs and 2.7 million are cats. The remaining 500,000 are other species.
