Why is the ductus venosus no longer needed when pig born?

Ductus venosus:

- Fetal: carries blood from the placenta to the inferior vena cava

After birth of the pig:

- Blood no longer needs to bypass the liver (no need for ductus venosus)

- Liver responsible for processing food in the new born pig
