What substance cannot be broken down by a cow?

Cellulose.

Cellulose is a polysaccharide that is the main component of plant cell walls. It is a tough and fibrous material that is resistant to digestion by most animals. Cows are ruminant animals that have a four-chambered stomach that allows them to digest plant material. However, cows are not able to digest cellulose. The cellulose passes through the cow's digestive system intact and is eventually eliminated in the feces.
