Rudolph is a relatively new addition to the reindeer team, first appearing in the 1939 story "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Robert L. May. Before Rudolph, Santa relied on the original eight: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen.
