When did the goblins exist?

The goblins are fictional creatures from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, and therefore did not exist in real life. They are first mentioned in The Hobbit, where they are described as small, humanoid creatures with large heads, green skin, and sharp teeth. They are often portrayed as being greedy, mischievous, and cowardly.
