When do ferrets spray?

Ferrets typically spray when frightened or agitated. If they are playing and startled or get into another aggressive encounter ferrets spray as defence mechanism. Female ferrets might exhibit spraying just before going into season. Additionally, ferrets kept within close proximity tend to exhibit the spraying behavior often.
