Why do horses eat afterbirth?

Horses typically do not eat the afterbirth of other horses. After the birthing process, a mare will usually consume the amniotic sac and other membranes as a natural way of keeping the birthing area clean and free from potentially harmful bacteria or predators that might be attracted to the scent.
