Can species that become extinct be replaced?

In most cases, species that become extinct cannot truly be replaced. Evolution takes millions of years, and even if a new species were to evolve to fill a similar ecological niche, it would not be the same species that was lost. Extinct species are often unique and irreplaceable parts of the ecosystem.
