Oysters are bivalve mollusks that produce pearls. While not all oysters produce pearls, some do when a foreign object, like a grain of sand or a parasite, gets lodged inside their shell. The oyster then coats the irritant with layers of nacre, the same substance that makes up the iridescent inner lining of its shell, creating a pearl.
