How did Surtsey appear suddenly out of the sea?

Surtsey did not appear suddenly out of the sea. It was formed over the course of several months in 1963 through a series of volcanic eruptions that occurred along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, approximately 18 miles south of Iceland.
