What type of algae forms coral reef?

Coral reefs are formed by tiny marine invertebrates called coral polyps. Coral polyps are animals, not algae. They live in colonies and secrete a hard outer skeleton made of calcium carbonate. Over time, the skeletons of dead coral polyps build up on top of each other, forming a coral reef.
