Where did the word aardvark come from?

The word "aardvark" is of Dutch origin. It's a combination of two Dutch words:

* "aard" meaning "earth"

* "vark" meaning "pig"

So, literally, "aardvark" means "earth pig", a fitting name for an animal that digs extensive burrows and spends much of its time underground.
