How many chinchillas are living today?

The IUCN estimates that the wild viscacha or mountain chinchilla population could be near to a million, while only several thousand long-tailed chinchillas survive in the wild. However, in captivity, estimates indicate approximately 15 - 20 million individuals worldwide for use in the fur industry or as household pets.
