While some rodents do hibernate during cold months, gerbils are tropical animals originally from the desert regions of Africa and Asia. They are adapted to warm environments and don't experience the need to hibernate.
Instead of hibernating, gerbils may become less active during cold weather, but they remain awake and continue to eat and drink.
