Why do gerbils have a forked uterus?

Gerbils, along with mice, rats, voles, lemmings, and a few closely related genera, do not have forked uteri like humans, but possess the duplex uterus - one which results when the Müllerian ducts remain separate and parallel along most of their lengths.
