Can you put soil in your hamsters cage?

While small amounts of dirt might benefit a hamster on its fur to help groom, you mustn't use potting soil as hamster substrate. Although not all potting soil is toxic, its ingredients could negatively impact a hamster's respiratory system if inhaled; and some ingredients also could be toxic when ingested.
