Why are grasshoppers so big?

Grasshoppers are not particularly big. The average size of a grasshopper is between 1 and 2 inches long. Some species of grasshoppers, such as the lubber grasshopper, can grow to be up to 3 inches long. However, these large grasshoppers are relatively rare.
