Myxomatosis is a viral disease that primarily affects rabbits. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1950 in an attempt to control the burgeoning rabbit population that was causing significant ecological damage.
While initially highly effective, the rabbit population has since developed resistance to the disease, and other control measures are now employed.
