What type of animal is a cormorant?

Cormorants are aquatic birds belonging to the family Phalacrocoracidae. They are closely related to other water birds such as anhingas, gannets, boobies, and pelicans. Cormorants are primarily marine birds found along the coasts, but some species also inhabit inland wetlands and lakes.
