Why do a woodpeckers live in dead trees?

Woodpeckers don't live in dead trees. They don't build their nests on dead trees! Most species of woodpeckers excavate nesting and roosting cavities in dead trees; however, a few make cavities only in live or mostly live trees because of preference or shortage of available dead and dying trees
