When was it illegal to hunt for ivory?

It is currently illegal to hunt for ivory in most countries. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) banned international trade in ivory in 1989. However, some countries still allow domestic ivory trade, and illegal poaching and trafficking of ivory continue to occur.
