Monotremes are the only mammals that lay eggs. They are also the only mammals that have a cloaca, which is a single opening for the digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts. Monotremes are found only in Australia and New Guinea. There are only five species of monotremes: the platypus and four species of echidna.
