Milk production in cats, like in other mammals, is triggered by hormones released during and after pregnancy. The hormones signal the mammary glands to start producing milk, which is called lactation. This usually begins within a few days of giving birth.
Before birth, a cat's mammary glands will be present but they will be small and inactive.
