How do mammals breathe underwater?

Mammals do not breathe underwater. They are air-breathing animals and require oxygen from the air to survive. While some mammals, such as whales and dolphins, are well-adapted to spending long periods of time in the water, they still need to surface periodically to breathe air. They cannot extract oxygen from water like fish do through gills.
