Why do domesticated hedgehogs run on weals at night?

Hedgehogs do not run on wheels at night. In the wild, hedgehogs are nocturnal animals and they would normally spend the night out hunting for food, exploring and socialising. While some pet hedgehogs may be given access to a wheel at night, this is not natural behavior and is only done for the pleasure of the pet owner.
