Why does a horses legs shake when going to lay down?

Horses' knees do not lock like ours do because they are double-jointed. When a horse is standing still, the muscles in their legs keep their knees straight. When they want to lie down, the muscles relax, and the horse's knees bend. The shaking is a result of the muscles briefly trying to keep the legs straight, even when the knees are bent.
