The axolotl is a critically endangered species of salamander endemic to Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco in central Mexico. They are found nowhere else in the world.
Due to water pollution, habitat destruction, over-fishing and invasive species, their population has severely declined over the years from millions to merely thousands in the wild today as declared by international conservation institutions.
