When was the pangolin discovered?

Pangolins are an ancient lineage, existing for at least 80 million years. The most recent pangolin species was discovered in 2012 through genetic studies of DNA extracted from confiscated meat and scales during a raid on an illegal wildlife market in Vietnam. This species is known as the Palawan pangolin (Manis culionensis) and is restricted to the Philippine island of Palawan.
