Why did rabbits come to America?

There's no historical record of rabbits immigrating to America. Rabbits were brought to America by European colonists in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were initially kept as pets, but soon escaped or were released into the wild, where they thrived and became a common sight in many parts of the country.
