Which mammals give eggs?

The mammals that lay eggs are called monotremes. There are only five species of monotremes in the world, all of which are found in Australia and New Guinea:

* Echidnas: There are four species of echidnas, including the short-beaked echidna and the long-beaked echidna.

* Platypus: The platypus is the only species in its genus.

Monotremes are unique because they share characteristics with both reptiles and mammals. They lay eggs, but they also have mammary glands and nurse their young with milk.
